Demystifying the moving process

Transitions are hard. We’re here to make it easier.

Moving is stressful. That’s a fact. According to one survey, 60% of people think of moving as the most stressful life event (divorce was second). Another survey found 13% of people would rather spend a week in jail than move.

And yet, changing your address often happens for good reasons. Sometimes it’s a new job. Often people move when they add children to the family, then again when the kids strike out on their own. Moving to a senior community is certainly a positive development, a time when people gain freedom and celebrate retirement.

That’s why we strive to do everything we can to make your move easier.

A philosophy of home

BRC’s philosophy is that the home you choose here belongs to you. You’re in the driver’s seat. That means we do everything we can to make your home fit your needs and tastes.

Often, the first thing people notice when they visit BRC is the wide selection of choices available. From duplexes and apartments to detached single-family homes (in different styles and sizes), we can suit most preferences and budgets.

After choosing a home, residents can customize their homes with new paint and flooring. If you don’t like carpet, we will install wood or laminate (and vice versa). Some homes may even be eligible for cabinetry and lighting upgrades. Some residents ask for structural updates, such as walling off a new room or enclosing a porch, or personalized landscaping. We may not be able to grant every request, but we promise to work with you to make your dreams real.

Good help is close at hand

Customizing your new home is the fun part. What about the arduous task of moving and becoming familiar with a new place? Fortunately, Bridgewater has an incredible move in-coordinator on staff, ready to help choose your customizations and even coordinate your renovations (so no worries about traveling if you live far away). She will even take measurements to make sure that heirloom china cabinet fits exactly where you want it.

Most importantly, she will answer all your questions—no matter how detailed or seemingly trivial. She introduces new residents to our amazing maintenance team, helping everyone get comfortable with new names and faces. She also can help you find the post office, supermarkets, gas stations, restaurants, and anything else you need. (That is if your new neighbors haven’t already offered their own suggestions!)

After move-in, the help doesn’t stop. Our maintenance team will hang pictures, put up curtains, and touch the place up for six months after move-in, free of charge. We can also assist with finding moving companies that specialize in senior transitions. For example, we can refer you to companies that not only help you move but will also purchase the items you don’t want to move. Many seniors find these groups to be very helpful.

Ask for a move-in guide

Remember, we’ve worked with hundreds of people on transitions—helping them to move, customize their new home, and get settled in. We’re confident we can assist in smoothing the transition. In fact, we’ve compiled our experience into a handy publication—download our moving guide checklist here.

We promise—our moves are far better than a week in jail!

To remain eligible for the Home No Matter What Promise, residents must fulfill their obligations in turn as citizens of the BRC community and not give away the resources needed to meet financial obligations to BRC.
