Team Member Spotlight: Krista McKean

When local television station WHSV wanted to interview a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) for its in-demand jobs series, they knew BRC could help them find just the right person.

Krista McKean has known she wanted to be a nurse since, as a teenager undergoing surgery, a caring nurse was the person who helped her through the painful and anxiety-producing experience. “I wanted to be that person who can do that,” she says.

Born in Pennsylvania, Krista moved to the Shenandoah Valley at age 10 and graduated from Turner Ashby High School in Bridgewater. Her first job at BRC was as a member of the Dining Services Team. She earned her LPN and began her nursing career as Charge Nurse. She worked the overnight shift from 11 pm to 7 am. Last November, she took on a new role as Clinical Coordinator of Joy House, one of BRC’s Nursing Households.

What does she value most about being a BRC team member? The opportunity to connect with BRC residents as a person and to be with them, helping them, in their home.

“I’m actually coming to a home. I eat lunch with my residents every day, which is not something that other nurses could probably say they do,” she said. “So that’s the most rewarding part of my job: coming into work every day is not like ordinary work. And, I love to help people.”
