Living Our Values Every Day

At Bridgewater Retirement Community, our culture is more than words on a wall—it’s how we show up for one another every day. Rooted in our core values of compassion, innovation, and stewardship, our cultural norms guide the way we work, serve, and grow together.

Core Values

Compassion

Compassion reminds us to see the person before the task, to listen with empathy, and to build relationships that honor dignity and individuality.

Innovation

Innovation calls us to stay curious, welcome fresh ideas, and continually look for better ways to enhance the lives of those we serve.

Stewardship

Stewardship inspires us to care for our resources with integrity and purpose, ensuring BRC’s mission thrives today and for generations to come.

Cultural Norms

These norms are not rules—they’re shared commitments. They shape how we treat each other, make decisions, and create a community where everyone can flourish. Whether you’re welcoming a new neighbor, collaborating with a teammate, or finding a creative solution to a challenge, you’ll see our values in action through the way we live out these norms.

We Prioritize People Over Tasks

  • Healthy relationships and meaningful connections are at the heart of our culture. We take time to be present with those we serve.
  • We always connect with the person before tackling the task.
  • The most important part of your badge? Your name. We’re all in this together to enrich community life for residents and each other.

We Honor the Natural Rhythm of Each Individual’s Day

  • We do not wake residents to accommodate our schedules or for non-urgent matters.
  • We learn their routines and preferences, making their day as personalized as possible.
  • We don’t assume residents’ preferences don’t change, and we regularly ask for their input.
  • Our focus is to support quality of life and quality of care.

Decisions Should Be Made Close to the Resident

  • Whenever possible, we involve the residents and those closest to them in decisions that impact their day.
  • We ask three key questions when making decisions related to a resident’s care or environment. Does this support our home environment? How can we creatively honor both resident preferences and safety/regulations? Who else should be included in this decision?

We Lead with Grace

  • We assume positive intent in our interactions
  • We are committed to open communication to better understanding and improvement- we’re always learning.
  • We speak up when we see something that doesn’t align with our culture or feel safe.

We are Friendly and Welcoming to Everyone

  • We greet residents, visitors, and colleagues with a smile and introduce ourselves when it feels right.
  • We wear our badges and help anyone in need around the community

We Find a Better Way

  • We challenge the notion of “we have always done it this way”, and work together to find a better way to serve our residents, team, and broader community
  • We embrace creativity and teamwork to honor both resident preferences and regulatory requirements.
  • We accept risk as a normal part of life

We Believe in the Power of Language

  • Words shape our environment and attitudes. We use language that fosters a positive, home and team-focused environment.
  • We carefully consider how we can involve residents in our interactions and are mindful to speak with others rather than about others

We Work in Residents’ Homes, They Do Not Live in Our Workplace

  • We think carefully about changes to the environment and avoid anything that feels too “institutional” in residential spaces.
  • We respect residents’ privacy, choices, and preferences. Residents direct life in their own homes.
  • We use our time wisely and look for ways to connect with residents or support our teammates (instead of phone usage/sitting)

We are Stronger as a Team

  • We serve all residents, not just those assigned to us.
  • We refrain from saying “it’s not my job,” and step up where we can.
  • We ask for help when needed and collaborate to make the resident experience the best it can be.

We lead by serving; empowering each of us to step into leadership.

  • We embrace our Fill the Cup mindset, actively seeking opportunities to support and serve others
  • We prioritize self-care, understanding that effective leadership begins with leading ourselves well- you can’t pour from an empty cup!

To remain eligible for the Home No Matter What Promise, residents must fulfill their obligations in turn as citizens of the BRC community and not give away the resources needed to meet financial obligations to BRC.
